Visit to the Barbican

Our Year 5 and 6 pupils took part in a guided architectural tour around the Barbican, where they learnt the history of the estate. The architecture of these buildings also illustrated their last art project on ‘one point perspective’.
They discovered that the origins of the name ‘Barbican’, were from the old French “barbecane” and the Latin “barbacana”, referring to a fort or a walled city. The pupils could see how elements of old forts, such as crenelations, arrow-slits and arches, were referenced in the entire estate.
